Tractor Pulling
On Friday evening I was sitting at the dinner table with my host family and the phone rang. Romeo (my host dad) went and picked it up. He then came into the kitchen and handed me the phone.
It turned out to be one of the girls from the Turnfest (my fitness fest) that I had been to the previous day. SH e was inviting me to go to a Tractor pulling fest. Olivia m (my host sister) and her boyfriends also were invited to come as well if they wished.
So Olivia, Leonard (Olivia’s boyfriend) and I rode our bikes to this girl’s house so we could all ride our bike to the Fest together with her, and other people.
We rode to her house then waited there talking with her and waiting for the others to arrive. We then all rode our bike to the Tractor pulling fest together. This fest was basically a part to celebrate a competition held earlier on in the day. The competition is …………., yes you guessed it….. Tractor pulling.
I had a lot of fun at this fest as these girls from the fitness club always are so nice and kind to be. It is so nice of them to invite me (a person they have just met) to go out with the,…it is even nicer that they were so nice and really looked out for me…..and by that I mean they spoke in High German to me, they always made sure I was introduced to their other friends, and that I knew what was going on.
We danced and had fun…even though the majority of people at this fest were not into the whole dancing spirit and just stood their drinking….and doing this really strange Swiss thing…..and that is sniffing tobacco…….
People all over Switzerland do this as it is totally legal…as what they are sniffing is fine grains of tobacco. I think it is the oddest most unattractive thing I have ever seen. This is because this tobacco leaves a brown stain around your nose…and when people are drunk they forget to wipe their nose and so have a brown nose all evening. And let me tell you it is not just young people who sniff tobacco …it is old people as well….they all snort tobacco, on the train at parties at functions etc.
I have talked to Swiss people about this subject of tobacco snorting and they say it is just like having a glass of wine…healthy and pleasant……and if you don’t do it in excess it is a social event that is part of their culture.
So back to the fest…we danced even though most other didn’t and we had fun. Olivia and her boyfriend left earlier than my self and the others…we stayed on having fun.
It was so nice of them to invite me out with them……….really nice. SO a message to you all…if you ever meet someone who is; an exchange student , or a foreigner… or even new in town……Invite them out with you, or have them come to your house for dinner, invite them for a coffee…..do something with them….because it will be just a few hours of your time …….. and these few hours mean so much to them as it is such a rare even to be randomly invited out and it is highly appreciated.

Angela,
The tobacco finely ground for sniffing is called snuff. Yuk, who would want cancer of the nose.
Dad
Gentlemen in the 1800s used to carry snuff boxes, some very elaborate, and would delicately 'take a pinch of snuff'. I did not know the custom still existed! I cannot say I would be enamoured with someone 'taking snuff'.
Love Mum xxx
